The owner of Appalachian Vacation Cabins was a friend of mine in Asheville, NC and she approached me to come up with a logo design for her vacation rental business. Her requirements were that the logo include the color green and that it include an image that resembled a cabin. When I initially developed this logo I was not using Adobe Illustrator so the original version was not vector but I chose to re-create it as a vector logo a year or two later. To create this logo I decided the draw the cabin by hand, scan the image and then work on the image with a computer. The main reason I chose to draw it by hand was to get the textures for the rough hewn wood, the rock fireplace and the rock steps which would have been much harder to draw on a computer. I first drew the cabin features and then used different surfaces under the paper just as you would make a rubbing on a tombstone. Sometimes a little creativity can help get a job done more efficiently. For the font I wanted something that looked fairly sturdy so I chose Albertus. The characters in Albertus give a feeling of stability because they flare outwards at the bottom.
